Moving Checklist - Moving Step by Step

Moving is more than just packing boxes – it's a major logistical undertaking. Approaching it without a plan quickly leads to losing track, time, and patience. With our detailed moving checklist for Switzerland, you'll have every step perfectly under control, from canceling your current lease to registering with your new municipality.

3 months before the move: Planning & decluttering

The foundation for a stress-free move is laid early. Now it's about deadlines and rough planning.

  • Terminate your lease: Terminate your current lease agreement in good time by registered mail (pay attention to the contractual notice period, usually 3 months to the end of a month).
  • Check your rental deposit account: Clarify the release of the old security deposit with the bank and management and set up the account for the new apartment.
  • Requesting vacation time: Request 1-2 days of moving leave from your employer (in Switzerland you are usually legally entitled to at least 1 day).
  • Decluttering & Disposing of: Don't take unnecessary baggage with you. Sort through your basement, attic, and closets.
💡 Pro tip: No time to go to the recycling center? Use our professional Clearance and disposal service in Zurich.
  • Book a moving company: Get quotes well in advance. The best moving companies are often booked up weeks ahead.

1 to 2 months in advance: Organization & packing materials

Now things are getting concrete. The administration begins and the materials are needed.

  • Get rein boxes and materials: Obtain sturdy moving boxes, tissue paper for dishes, bubble wrap, and packing tape. (Find everything in the highest quality in our Moving shop).
  • Internet & Telephone: Change your internet connection so that you have Wi-Fi in your new apartment from day one.
  • Report address changes: Inform your banks, insurance companies, health insurance provider, road traffic office and subscription services about your new address.
  • Organize tradespeople: Do any walls in the old apartment need painting or dowel holes need filling?
  • Packing the first boxes: Pack things you don't need right now (e.g., winter clothes in summer, books, decorations).

1 to 2 weeks beforehand: The final sprint

Moving day is approaching. Now it's time to focus on the important details to ensure everything runs smoothly on the big day.

  • Set up mail forwarding: Instruct the postal service to forward your letters and parcels for the next 12 months.
  • Parking spaces & no-stopping zone: Check whether there is enough space for the moving truck in front of both houses on moving day (If you are moving with Easy Umzüge, we will take care of setting up the no-parking zone for you).
  • Serafe & energy suppliers: Notify Serafe (radio/TV license fee) and your electricity provider (e.g. EKZ) of your move.
  • Draw a furniture layout plan: Sketch out where each piece of furniture should be placed in your new apartment. This will save the movers a lot of time and you unnecessary moving things around.
  • Schedule move-out cleaning: Who will clean the old apartment for the management?
💡 To be on the safe side: Book our Move-out cleaning with acceptance guarantee. We clean thoroughly and are present at the handover of the apartment.

1 day before the move: Preparation for the big day

  • Pack a survival kit: Pack a bag with the essentials for the first 24 hours (toothbrush, toilet paper, medication, coffee maker, pajamas, chargers).
  • Defrosting the refrigerator: Empty and defrost the refrigerator and freezer. Tape the doors shut for transport.
  • Organize catering: Get water, coffee and snacks for yourself and the moving helpers.
  • Withdraw cash: For any minor emergencies that may arise on moving day.

Moving day: Let's go!

  • Note the meter readings: Take photographs of the electricity, gas, and water meters in both the old and new apartments.
  • Guided tour with the professionals: Show the team leader of the moving company exactly what is being taken along and what (e.g. bulky items) is being left behind.
  • Remove nameplates: Remove your name from the mailbox and doorbell of your old apartment.
  • Install lighting: In a new apartment, the lamps should be hung first, especially in winter.
  • Apartment handover (old): Hand over the old apartment to the management in a cleaned condition and sign the handover protocol.

After the move: Arrive & Get things done

The hardest part is over! Only a few administrative steps separate you from relaxed living.

  • Register your new address with the local municipality: They generally have in Switzerland 14 days, to deregister with the old municipality and register with the new residents' registration office.
  • Create a list of defects: If you notice any hidden defects in your new apartment (scratches in the parquet flooring, defective sockets), send a list of defects by registered mail to the new management company within 10 to 14 days.
  • Label your mailbox: Please affix your name to the new mailbox in good time so that the mail forwarding order works.
  • Unpack & sit back: Unpack the boxes and enjoy your new home!
